Legal Entity & Leadership

Legal Entity: Non-for-Profit

The ABMI provides knowledge to management agencies so that they can make informed decisions. The ABMI is not a management agency itself and, as such, does not have a vested interest in the outcome of decision-making processes. In order to minimize concerns about conflict-of-interest and maximize the application of knowledge, in 2007 the ABMI was incorporated as a registered not-for-profit member-based organization that is dedicated to monitoring changes in Alberta’s biodiversity, and that is arms-length from both government and industry.

Leadership

Board of Directors

The ABMI Board of Directors is composed of representatives from the Government of Alberta, environmental non-governmental organization sector, forest sector, energy sector, agriculture sector, and the research community. Board members serve staggered terms of two years to balance continuity and the opportunity for renewal. The Board of Directors appoints the Executive Director, who is accountable for the ensuring that the Institute remains effective, impartial, and accessible.

Science Committee

The ABMI is built on a foundation of world-class science. To ensure continued excellence, the ABMI is pleased to announce the formation of an independent Science Committee composed of global experts in biodiversity monitoring and conservation. The purpose of the Science Committee is to provide external, third-party review and recommendations on strategic science decisions as they relate to the operations of the ABMI.
